Women's Mental Health
Women’s Mental Health
People assigned female at birth often face unique mental health challenges, many of which are linked to hormonal changes throughout life. These shifts can impact emotional well-being during menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, menopause, and more.
Postpartum Depression
The postpartum period—the days and weeks after giving birth—is a time of significant physical and emotional adjustment in women’s mental health. While many new parents experience joy, around 85% also face some form of mood disturbance, often referred to as the “baby blues.”
In certain cases, symptoms can intensify, disrupting everyday routines and emotional well-being. Approximately 10% to 15% of new parents face postpartum depression or anxiety, showing up as sadness, heightened irritability, trouble sleeping, overwhelming hopelessness, or challenges forming a bond with their newborn. These issues exist on a continuum, from brief postpartum blues to acute postpartum psychosis.
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
PMDD is a significant disorder in women’s mental health marked by severe mood swings, intense irritability, and depression in the days before menstruation. More intense than common PMS, PMDD affects about 3% to 8% of menstruators and can often severely disrupt daily routines.
They typically appear in week leading up to menstruation and subside when bleeding begins.
PMDD can be managed through counseling, adjustments to daily routines, and occasionally medications.
Menopause
Menopause marks the natural end of menstrual cycles, but the transition—often referred to as perimenopause—can bring significant mental and emotional changes in women’s mental health. Alongside physical symptoms like hot flashes and sleep disturbances, many people experience anxiety, mood swings, depression, memory issues, and sexual dysfunction.
Menopause’s onset, often preceded by perimenopause, ends menstrual cycles yet frequently ushers in notable changes in mood, cognition, and emotional resilience. Beyond hot flashes and disrupted sleep, many individuals experience significantly heightened anxiety, noticeable mood swings, depression, memory lapses, and sexual dysfunction.
With Diligence Care, we help individuals navigate this transition with supportive therapies, medication management, and personalized treatment plans tailored to their unique experiences.
Infertility
Infertility— not conceiving or carrying a pregnancy— can deeply affect mental health. Many experience waves of sorrow, frustration, and profound loneliness after emotionally struggling. Feelings like depression, anxiety, and guilt often follow these difficult circumstances.
Diligence Care offers individual, couples, and group therapy to support patients through infertility-related challenges. Treatment may also include medications to manage symptoms and promote emotional well-being during this difficult time.
Mood Disorders
Mood disorders affect how individuals think, feel, and function. While emotional ups and downs are a normal part of life, mood disorders are characterized by persistent or extreme fluctuations that interfere with daily life.
Women and those designated female at birth might encounter mood disturbances due to hormonal changes, life challenges, or inherited traits. These emotional issues often emerge in periodic, distinct cycles and could present as depression, bipolar illness, or other types of mood instability.
Several proven treatments exist, such as psychotherapy, medication, hormone therapy, and holistic methods like lifestyle modifications and dietary guidance. Recovery is achievable—and starts by reaching out.
Facing these challenges? You’re not alone. Mental health concerns during hormonal and reproductive stages are real—and at Diligence Integrated Care, we offer caring support tailored to you.
